INTERFERENCE

What is object making? What is mark making? What happens when the development of a mark is contingent on the structure of the object? Interference is a series of paintings that investigate mark making and spatial relationships through tangible elements rather than illusionary techniques.

In this body of work, the “mark” is generated by the structure of the painting itself. The canvas stretcher, that which typically serves as a means of maintaining the structural integrity of a painting, now has the most influence on the composition. Illusionistic tactics are removed, leaving only the interference of the structure with the flatness of the picture plane as the source of the mark. These works participate in, and are affected by, conditions of real space, resulting in the development of a visual truth.
